For a cruise on the sacred waters of our faith
Summer 2012

This summer, starting on the 24th of June, we will be taking a cruise on the “SS Suncook United Methodist Church”. At the start of our cruise we will be learning about our Captain, our Risen Lord Jesus Christ. Who is our captain to us? What does our captain mean to us? Then we will travel with Him on some of the ships that He is captain of. I hope you will join me on the cruise of a life time as we cruise through the summer on the waters of faith.

Sermon Series: Cruising the Sacred Waters of Our Faith

A reading from the Gospel of Mark…chapter 4…verses 35-41 from the Common English Bible…Listen for a word from and of the Word of God…

Good morning…I love summer. I love spending time having fun in the sun with my family. It is a time of relaxation and renewal. I like to take day trips with the girls and Ray. I think they really make the summer almost endless…taking time out with each other and visiting places that we don’t get a chance to during the rest of the year. We as a church family are also going on a trip together this summer. We’re going on a cruise as we Cruise the Sacred Waters of our Faith together. I pray it will be a beautiful trip and that we come away from it relaxed and renewed with a new vision from God for our lives.

Now…to be sure we have a trusted guide, we are going to be taking a look at our captain for this cruise…our Risen Lord, Jesus Christ…for a couple of weeks and then as we embark on the waters of our faith we will visit a few other ships that He is also captain of. Now…have you all got your boarding passes? You know…those boarding passes are special ones. You can bring along a friend on your pass if you want. As a matter of fact, I would encourage you to share your pass with a friend. It promises to be an exciting cruise… But what would a voyage on the high seas be without lei’s? So…I have my helpers here who will pass one out to everyone.

As my helpers pass out lei’s, let’s get started. First of all, who is this Jesus who is the Captain of our ship? Is He a captain that can be trusted? Does He know the waters well enough for us to be safe as He navigates us through the waters of our faith? What will He do if the waters get rough?

Well…in the Psalm that was read this morning, we hear about the Lord, our captain. Scripture tells us that He is a stronghold for the oppressed and that those who put their trust in Him will not be forsaken. Jesus is the One, True Captain of our ship of life and as we let Him guide us on our journey He will protect us. We can recount and remember all of the good He has done on our behalf…all those times when He steered us in the right direction…all those times that He was able to help us in the storms of life and brought us through. He knows us well enough and the journey that we travel that he can see the “unforeseen” by us. He is our hope beyond hope and will safely bring us to home port.

In the 2 Corinthians scripture written by Paul this morning, we hear an affirmation of Jesus’ trustworthiness…a witness of Christ’s saving power. Paul told the people of Corinth about how He gave over the helm of his life for Christ and how Christ saw him through some of the toughest times. It was by following Christ and his teachings…trusting in those teachings…that Paul was able to endure all that he went through. He always rejoiced in the Lord and though he was poor he was rich in Christ, though he had nothing he was rich beyond measure in the kingdom of God. Christ saw Paul safely through as he sailed the uncharted waters of the first church. Jesus was his GPS, so to speak, and Paul was all the more blessed because of it.

And then we have the Mark scripture that I read this morning. Jesus had and has the power to calm the storm. Even the disciples, who were with Him every day, were amazed by this miracle…even the waves and wind obeyed Jesus. When the waters got rough and their seemed to be an eminent doom Jesus, by only a few words, was able to smooth out the waters and bring about restored peace.

The question is not so much “Who is Jesus”, but “Who is Jesus to you?” Jesus wants you and He wants me to embark on a journey of faith that may lead us to uncharted waters but He will be our guide.

  • Jesus wants to take all of us to the other side ® He doesn’t want to leave us where we are but wants to transform us into who we should be. He wants to be the Captain of our “Charter Cruise” of faith.
  • Following Jesus means leaving the crowd behind ® going with the crowd usually will take us away from the navigation of Christ in our lives.
  • It also means that we will have our share of Life’s storms ® Jesus never promises to “skirt us around the storms of life.” Jesus does promise to be with us always and with the sound of His voice, gives us peace even in the roughest storm.
  • He cares about you and He cares about me ® on the sea of faith, we can always count on the captain of the ship to know the way.
  • He calms the storms ® we have all had our share of storms but rest assured…we will make it through by His guiding beacon in the darkness of our storm.
  •  When we are afraid He asks us “Why” ® even the first disciples were afraid. Fear freezes us at times and it is our captain who comes in and drives away the fear leaving a peace that is priceless to you and to me.

So…who is this Jesus? He is the Son of God and Savior of the world. He is the Head of the Church. He is our strength in times of trouble. He is our Rock and our Redeemer. He is our Mighty Tower and Refuge. He is my Lord and my Savior. The question is this…who is Jesus to you? Is He Lord and King or just the “first mate” on your voyage of life? Let us cruise on the sacred waters of our faith resting assured that we have a captain that can even calm a storm with His voice. How awesome is that?

AMEN

You Need “Two” Families

June 10, 2012

Second Sunday of Kingdomtide

Worship Theme: Family

1 Samuel 16:1-23

Mark 3:31-35

A reading from the Gospel of Mark. . .Chapter three. . .verses thirty-one through thirty-five. . .I am reading from the Message Bible this morning. Listen. . .for a word from God for you and for me. . .the people of God. . .

You know. . .I really believe that the movie producers and TV show producers of all these family shows really have it wrong. We either see these so completely dysfunctional families and say to ourselves, “boy, I am glad my family is not like that”. . .or we see these family’s that we say to ourselves,” yah right. . .only on TV or the big screen.” I think that real families are somewhere in the middle. But one thing is true in all cases whether on TV or in real life, we need family to survive.

Sometimes we have a family that is not “blood relatives” and other times we have family’s that even with all their dysfunction. . .they still are family, they still stick together through thick and thin. . .It is hard sometimes to function as a family even in the best of them. Unfortunately, there are many in humanity that don’t have either, they don’t have a spiritual family or a physical one. . .but that’s another sermon for another day. . .having both is great but you need at least one place to call home. . .one place where you accepted. . .one place where the grace of God abounds. . .

We need to have two families, our physical family and our faith family. But I think that the most important one is our faith family because without it, a lot of times, we don’t have anyone to help us through the dysfunction of our physical one. . .Jesus knew about the need for humanity to have that Spiritual family. . .that Spiritual home. . .where all are welcome. . .

In the Old Testament Reading this morning, we hear about David and Saul. Now Saul was having issues with evil spirits, and it was his own fault. They came and tormented him because the Lord had departed from Saul because of the things he had done. So he told his servants to find someone to play music for him and the spirits would go away. They remember David and recommended him for the job.

Now when David came and played, the spirits departed from Saul. He was so pleased with David that he took him in. . .he found favor with Saul. In time David even became like family to Saul and Saul’s son Jonathan and David became like brothers. David had a new family not of blood but family anyway. How ironic it is that David became a king, a king that was a “man after God’s own heart”. . .hmmmm.  This outsider became like family. . .

In the reading from Mark this morning that I read, we hear Jesus doing a completely radical thing. . . now his biological family showed up to come and get Him out of there. They thought that Jesus was out of His mind so they were going to take Him home before something really bad happened. . .they were more than likely a little embarrassed by Him than anything else. But Jesus did a real radical thing. He said that His family was not just the physical family but also the Spiritual family. . .all who believed. . .all who obey God. . .All who obey and believe. . .this was the beginning of the adoption at the cross. . .the writing of the document that Jesus sealed with His blood for you and for me. . .

In this new, radical family, we become related to God as Father, Christ as our brother and the church as the mother. You see having the physical family, and only the physical family, you are lost but having the Spiritual one as well, even if we don’t have the physical family, your spiritual family is sufficient enough for eternal life with God. And yes even within that spiritual family, with in that church as mother part of the family of faith there is dysfunction. And to me. . .that’s a shame. Don’t get me wrong, I know there is dysfunction of some sort in most relationships. But when we decide to shun others because of their doctrine. . .their color. . .their gender. . .their lifestyle. . . that’s when we need to look in the mirror at ourselves we need to change ourselves.

You may be wondering why the stole I am wearing today is much shorter than the ones I usually wear. No. . .Shanequa didn’t go wild with a pair of scissors this morning. I wear it in solidarity with some of my brothers and sisters in Christ. When I was at Annual Conference. . .there was some talk about what happened at General Conference this year. There was a lot of debate. . .a lot of un-Christ-like attitudes and actions at General Conference this year. We as a family got it wrong on many layers. But we are family. At General Conference, there were labels put on people. . .there was division. . .there were some who made to feel unworthy of their call from God and were told they could not follow their call from God. But we are family. What a tragedy when God’s people hurt their family members.

Jesus began a new type of family during His ministry on earth. . .A family that is for all believers. . .not just for ones who believe as you and I do but for all who obey God and follow Jesus. We need to get this right. We need to get this right because if we don’t. . .the family ties become severed and may never be healed. We need to build the family ties that bind and become the healing balm for the nations. Let us go forth for Christ with the “Super Glue” of our faith and graft all of our brothers and sisters in Christ no matter who or where they are. We are all Family. . .you and I. . .and the whole body of Christ.

AMEN!

We are family

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (The Message)

So speak encouraging words to one another. Build up hope so you'll all be together in this, no one left out, no one left behind. I know you're already doing this; just keep on doing it.

There seems to be so much division amongst and within our denominations. There are some that feel that they hold the key to the "real truth" of the bible. There are many "non-believers" that see this and decide that they do not want any part of Christ's Church.

We, as Christians...Christ Followers...need to get this right. We are called to be as one and to not become a stumbling block to those who are the ones we are witnessing to. We need to come to the table without our own agendas and with the agenda of Christ. Then and only then will we be able to be true laborers in the vineyard...

The Trinity and You…

June 3, 2012

1st Sunday of Kingdomtide

Worship Theme: Trinity Sunday

Isaiah 6:1-8NRSV Bible

Romans 8:12-17 NRSV Bible

John 3:1-17 Message Bible

A reading from the Gospel of John, chapter 3, verses 1-17. I am reading from the Message Bible this morning. Listen for a Word from God…

Good morning…I have been enjoying the good weather we have been having and have spent a lot of time in the yard enjoying God’s splendor in creation. The birds have been even more glorious if that could happen in their songs of praise. The flowers are blooming in joyful song. The bees have been busy gathering nectar. Speaking of bees, have you ever noticed how children…or should I say a child…knows how to swarm. There is only one child but they seem to be swarming around you like a swarm of bees? One child can seem to be everywhere at once. I have more than once asked “are there more than one of you because it seems like there is?” It can tend to be exhausting for me at times. But…there is one thing that is One but made up of three that gives me peace Knowing that it is always there, ever present, ever watching, always close at hand, and that is our God…our “Three person” Creator.

Today, we, as Christians, are celebrate Trinity Sunday…we celebrate the Oneness of God…sort of the components that make up our Triune God. They are coequal in their importance…coexistent three in one, at all times…and coeternal in that they were there even in the beginning. We are what you call “Trinitarians” where as this is our doctrine of the Father, Son and Spirit…ok…theology lesson done…

You may be saying to yourself “Ok so that is great Pastor Ruth but what does that have to do with me and my walk with God? I know that God is three persons in one.” Well…the trinity has a lot to do with you and with me. It is how our faith is formed…let me explain…

In the three Scriptures that were read this morning, we heard about the three pieces or persons that make up the Trinity.

1.   God the Son ® (Gospel) In Jesus the Son, we have a rebirth. We are incorporated into the kingdom by rebirth. God the Son shares His eternal inheritance with us. We learn the truth about God through the Son.

2.   God the Spirit ® (Romans) the Spirit confirms we are a child of God. We through the Spirit we are able to go to the throne of grace and cry out “Abba Father”…by the way, Abba Father is translated “Daddy”…we can go to dad through the Spirit. God the Spirit leads us on and in our daily walk…our daily lives. We are reborn in and through the Spirit of God.

3.   God the Father ® (Isaiah) when we see and contemplate on God the Father and His glory we have seen in our lives…in the lives of other…in creation, we are inspired to worship. God the Father made us and we experience the love of God the Father through God the Son and God the Spirit.

We need all three pieces in our lives to be able to walk our journey of faith. Without all three there is an imbalance in the equation. It is an essential part of the Christian life. Without them our walk is like this tripod. When all three legs are working it is able to stand but take away one of the legs…it falls over.

Beloved child of the Triune God, how is our walk? Are we walking on all three legs or are you or I kind of limping along without all the pieces to help us walk upright? Is it time to extend all the legs of the tripod? Our God has a plan for you and for me but we need to have our legs extended in order to walk without of society for our aid. We need to believe in the power of the three in order to make us one in the Lord. Without that tripod in our life, we are not able to see through the lens of the camera of heaven. Let us extend our legs as we take the hand of our Creator God…Three is much better than one or two. With three we are able to stand against any storm life brings our way.

Amen!
